Let’s daydream. What if we were starring as the main character in our own TV shows? Go ahead, imagine it. What would it be like? Who would you be, where would it be, what would be the soundtrack?
It’s the story of your life, written by you: so what do you create?
- the genre
- the characters
- the environment
- the conflict
Whatever this makes you think of, it’s completely unique – your personal fantasy. One person might want to live in a fairytale of castles and dragons, while another in a New York crime series and the third in a flimsy romantic musical.

Boy, would it be different from your life right now.
Real life is usually pretty boring in comparison to what happens on TV, so there would be much more drama. The cute guy next door? He gets in a car accident and ends up in a coma, but not before leaving you a mysterious letter.
The next day there would be an earthquake. Then you would discover you’re the victim of an identity theft, but you would hunt down the responsible and get your money back,
Everyone would look better. Women would wake up with a full face of makeup and expertly styled hair, while brawny men would work in the yard with their shirts off. Even the guy who’s in a coma would look perfect.
We would have a huge closet and wear something new every day, our old clothes simply disappearing.
Even though life would be a lot more exciting, there would be a certain pattern of consistency. Every day, week or month would act itself out according to a theme. It would be everywhere, happening to us and to people around us.
There would be less strange coincidences as everything would make sense with your plot. People would be more predictable, too, more fitting into stereotypes.
The situations we would get into, the songs playing in the waiting room radio at the dentist’s, the song in the background would always fit the mood. Our emotional state would be a predictor of the weather. For example, whenever you’d cry, rain would automatically follow (duh).
So, what would my show be like?
I would go for dangerous intrigue, maybe a murder mystery or time traveling. In any case, it seems silly not having some kind of extra ability or superpower.
In my show, my character would be a badass woman working hard, traveling all over the place and also having fun (there would definitely be a lot of hot guys involved).
The soundtrack? I haven’t decided that yet. Maybe something like the soundtrack of The Handmaid’s Tale, that one was pretty awesome.
Of course, this is just one of my ideas… I wouldn’t mind being able to choose other genres, other kinds of stories, as well.
What was the point of all this?
Daydreaming is so much fun, but there are other reasons why it’s good to play pretend like this. I did some research and it turns out, letting our mind wander has many benefits.
- improve our focus and memory
- make us more creative
- help us solve problems
- help us achieve our goals
If we connect to our inner selves more, we’ll understand the things we truly want in life and be more likely to believe we can achieve them.
Ultimately, the idea of this post was to make you ask yourself a question:
If you could just design it from scratch, what kind of life would you live?
As an added bonus, you got all those awesome benefits from daydreaming.
